Comfortable Clothing

European weather can be unpredictable, and you will likely be on the move frequently since you need to walk a lot to get the best of each travel destination.

Some essentials for your European travel are a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes. And don’t forget to pack a few smart casual outfits cause there will be some events where the dress codes might be more formal.

A Travel Backpack

A good travel backpack is a must for solo travelers, no matter the destination. Choose one that is durable, comfortable to carry, and fits airline carry-on dimensions.

It should have multiple compartments to help you organize your belongings and some extra points if it is anti-theft.

Essential Travel Documents

Keep your passport, travel insurance information, and a list of emergency contacts in a safe yet accessible place.

I would also recommend to have digital copies, just in case. Consider taking with you only the essentials and keeping the other documents safe, you never know what will happen and you need to be careful with these documents.

Power Adapter

Power sockets and voltages vary throughout Europe and they’re also very different from the ones in America. So, a universal travel adapter will save you from the hassle of finding the right plug for charging your device or frying your electronics.

First Aid Kit and Safety Items

A basic first aid kit is a must no matter de destination, and it should include medication for headaches, fever, or allergies, along with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and hand sanitizer.

Since you might be traveling solo, you gotta be prepared for minor injuries. And don’t forget to pack extra face masks and perhaps a small bottle of hand sanitizer, just in case.

Apps and Tools

In my blog post of tips to travel alone for the first time I talk about how important it is to be connected. So a local SIM card and a portable Wi-Fi device are essentials regardless of the destination.

Also, apps like Google Maps, CityMapper, Duolingo, or Google Translate can be lifesavers if it’s your first time traveling to Europe. And please don’t forget to download offline maps or guides in case you don’t have reception or wi-fi!

Secure Money Management

Split your money and keep it in different locations. Remember, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, it doesn’t matter how safe the destination is, you need to keep your money safe.

And, a must before your trip (or at least something I do) is to inform the bank I’ll be traveling to avoid any card blocks because they suspect my card was stolen.

Compact Camera or Smartphone Accessories

Okay, but taking pictures with a digital camera is just another vibe when traveling. Alternatively, you can also invest in other accessories like a tripod to make it easy to take pictures while traveling alone.

Journal or Travel Diary

I don’t know about you, but I’m all about journaling. And what better way to document your trips than through a diary?

What I do is that I carry a Polaroid with me, and take all the pictures I know I will be writing about at night. Then, when I get to the hotel or Airbnb, I take a moment to reflect on my day and write down my feelings about the destination.
