The Art Dubai Group celebrates a landmark moment for Dubai’s cultural scene with the unveiling of the city’s first major public sculpture as part of a new multi-year Public Art Strategy. It has been a privilege to work alongside the team, led by Dr. Saeed Mubarak Kharbash Al Marri, Chief Executive Officer - Arts & Literature, the 250+ UAE-based artists who took part in the open call, and the five winning artists who challenged the single artist competition process, and chose instead to come together to create a collaborative sculpture that clearly represents and blends their individual artistic practices. Very much in the spirit of this public work and its location, the five shortlisted artists decided to submit a collaborative proposal that reflected their diverse backgrounds and perspectives and blended their creative ideas and artistic visions. We invite you to visit Union of Artists - the site overlooks the Etihad Museum and Union House, landmarks that commemorate the formation of the UAE. The permanent sculpture reflects the architecture of these buildings and the historical significance of this location in the UAE. The striking sculpture comprises seven pillars that draw inspiration from traditional Emirati ‘Areesh’, structures where dried fronds of palm leaves, placed vertically as poles, are linked with ropes to create simple enclosures providing protection from the elements. The work’s seven pillars are also representative of the seven emirates that make up the UAE. The five artists—Afra Al Dhaheri, Shaikha Al Mazrou, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Asma Belhamar, and Khalid Albanna hailing from different emirates—Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah— bring together a range of generational perspectives and visual languages. This powerful work sets a high standard for future works under the Dubai Public Art initiative—congratulations to everyone involved.Union of Artists is commissioned by Dubai Culture in collaboration with Art Dubai. It is part of the Dubai Public Art initiative, which aims to transform the emirate into an open, accessible and global art capital, providing exceptional art experiences that contribute to enriching the cultural and artistic scene of the region. This is the first landmark commission to be unveiled from a number of commissions with partner cultural institutions Alserkal Avenue, Art Jameel, and Tashkeel. As the UAE’s art ecosystem continues to develop, expand, and mature, the country is set to see a rich programme of conferences, talks, and summits taking place over the next two weeks. The combined programme will place the UAE, and its booming arts and culture sector, centre-stage, and an important part of the National Strategy for the Cultural and Creative Industries. On 29 February, we are kicking off an incredible series of distinct and interconnected talks, conferences, and summits in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, starting with the 17th edition of Art Dubai’s flagship summit the Global Art Forum, which will take place over three days, organised by commissioner Shumon Basar and curator Nadine El-Khoury. The programme, which first took place in 2007, at the very first edition of the fair, will convene the world’s most compelling artists, architects, academics, curators, and thinkers to examine the relationship betweenextreme weather and extreme change. This year, we are launching the first edition of a new Digital Summit, developed in partnership with Dubai Culture, building on the platform created by Art Dubai Digital, and inviting international and local industry leaders to discuss and debate the expanding digital art ecosystem and Dubai’s unique place within it.The second edition of the Art Business Conference Dubai will focus on two key themes: collections management and the future of the digital art business, and a series of Modern and Collector Talks - presented in partnership with Dubai Collection - will explore the geopolitical forces that gave rise to today’s Global South, and the patrons and institutions who continue to shape this dynamic landscape. From 1-3 March, Sharjah Art Foundation will host the 16th edition of their incredibly successful March Meeting. Entitled “Tawashujat” — meaning “intertwining” in Arabic — the programme will bring together collectives whose practices consciously intertwine diverse forms of artmaking and community building across a programme of talks, workshops, and performances. Then, from 3-5 March, Abu Dhabi’s Culture Summit will return to Manarat Al Saadiyat. The annual forum convenes leaders across the fields of arts, design, heritage, media, museums, public policy, and technology, to identify how culture can transform societies and communities worldwide. This year’s edition, titled “A Matter of Time”, will explore our changing relation to time, and how this change is impacting the way culture is produced, received, and consumed. These events, presented by our incredible community, which consists of Alserkal, Jameel Arts Centre, DDX, Sharjah Art Foundation, The Art Business Conference and more, form part of a long-standing commitment to enriching the development of education, learning, and capacity buildingintheregion.

“Preparations are on for Art Dubai, which has been an integral part of the international cultural calendar since 2007 and has regularly featured Indian artists.” Over the past 17 years, through a mix of public-private patronage, the cultural scene in Dubai, and the UAE, has witnessed the growth of commercial platforms that simultaneously build and invite, critical dialogue surrounding the arts and support the infrastructure needed to maintain a sustainable ecosystem of creatives. Benedetta Ghione, our Executive Director, draws attention to the range of programming taking place in the Middle East, ranging from the annual March Meeting—Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists, curators and art practitioners to explore critical issues in contemporary art—in Sharjah, to Art Dubai and its flagship Global Art Forum (a Dubai-based annual, transdisciplinary summit) and more.Read more about the Middle East’s contemporary art ecosystem: https://lnkd.in/det3vQHJThank you avantika bhuyan!
