When we made the switch from using products that contained harmful chemicals to using natural products for our family, deodorant was at the top of the list of items to swap. Chemicals and parabens can be very harmful for your body, especially in an area with tender lymph nodes, like your armpits. This information prompted me to develop my own homemade natural deodorant recipe.

Homemade Natural Deodorant

We have tried several brands of natural deodorant with mediocre success. Nothing was really making the cut and no one wants to walk around with stinky pits. Having a couple of middle school aged boys we definitely needed a deodorant recipe that worked!

I decided I would give some natural homemade deodorant recipes a try because nothing else seemed to be working well. It’s always exciting to try something new and to know exactly what we are putting on our bodies.

I just made a small batch the first time because I wanted to make sure it got rid of the stink worked well for us. I was so excited and after tweaking my recipe a few times, we had a winner! No more stinky pits for us!

5 simple ingredient deodorant

I use five simple natural ingredients that I keep on hand so anytime we are running low (and risking B.O.), I can whip up a quick batch. I usually double my recipe since we have quite a few armpits around here that need it. These ingredients are easy to get and you may already have some or even all of them at home!

How to make homemade deodorant

Step 1-Place the organic virgin coconut oil in a double boiler on medium heat and let it completely melt. I don’t have an official double boiler so I just use a sauce pan and a heavy glass measuring cup. A heavy glass bowl placed over a pan also works well. Coconut oil melts quickly so this step only takes a couple of minutes.

Step 2-Add organic beeswax and allow it to melt into the coconut oil. This takes a good ten minutes or so. Sit back, relax, and maybe read some of your favorite blog posts or have a nice cup coffee or tea while waiting. (Tip: The smaller the beeswax pieces, the faster it melts)

Step 3- Once everything has melted into a liquid, stir or whisk in aluminum free baking soda and non gmo cornstarch to make a paste. make sure to break up any clumps of the powder while mixing. Keep the mixture over the double boiler because the wax will begin to harden and set as soon as it is removed from the stove.

Step 4-Put 10-20 drops of your favorite high quality essential oils. You can use whatever oils you like. I always use a protective blend for its anti-bacterial properties. It also help boost the immune system. Frankincense oil is my other go to. I believe Frankincense should be used everyday because it is such a wonderful oil with many benefits.

Step 5- Once all of the ingredients are mixed well, pour the paste into deodorant containers. You can purchase the containers online and then reuse them every time you make a new batch of deodorant. I have also repurposed some older empty container from store bought brands. If I have any extra paste, you can pour it into a small jar.

I place all of the containers in the fridge for 10-15 minutes so the deodorant can set up. If you don’t have a solid shelf, you may want to place the containers on a pan to keep them from falling over and leaking while the deodorant sets. When I run out of my sticks, I just melt the jar full and pour into the container. You can also just use a jar and apply with your fingertips.

This is a super simple homemade natural deodorant recipe and I can ensure that my family is using a safe product. We have been making and using this recipe for close to a decade now and we are still very pleased with how well it works. It’s fun to make and the kids love helping me make it. Happy, healthy, and not smelly armpits are definitely a good thing.

I started making my own deodorant at home and it works so much better. I’m using refillable roll-on bottles like these https://amzn.to/2Nq9VMc. I also waste less plastic doing this way.

Odd question, but did you have any irritation when you first starting using this? I tried Schmidt’s all natural deodorant recently and my poor pits were bright red and inflamed! OUCH! I’ve since been using Tom’s, but it’s not working at all. I’ve stubbornly kept using it, because I don’t want to waste money. If you had no reaction at first, I may break down and make my own.

Thank you for sharing your recipe!

You may be having a sensitivity to baking soda. I’d try arrow root in place of baking soda in the recipe. 🙂

Hi, I wanted to give this recipe a go myself and I was wondering if you ever had any problems with oil stains form to coconut oil? Thanks.

I have had problems with oil stains in the past. I solved it by adding a little Dawn dish soap in a spray bottle with a lot of water. It should be about half as dark blue as it was before you started to dilute it. I spray that on the stain and rub a little before tossing in the washing machine.
I’ve been told to add peroxide to it, but I have never needed to.
      Hope this helps.

Hey, Jenna! I just wanted to pop by and say hi 🙂 I’ve never made homemade deodorant before but kind of sick of paying $6 for store bought natural deodorant. Ready to give this a try! I’m gonna do a cost breakdown and see if this works better for me in application and pocketbook. Thanks for the recipe!!
