Matilda The Musical, Roald Dahl’s much-loved tale of an extraordinary child with hideous parents, is the globally renowned stage show from Tim Minchin and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
This is the story of Matilda Wormwood, a child with an incredible talent for learning. Despite being hampered by unscrupulous, uncaring parents who care neither for their daughter or for education, she excels intellectually and even discovers a rather unique talent. Each time her parents treat her badly, the young Matilda teaches them a lesson – but will she be able to do the same to the terrifying and tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull?
Having started life premiering at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010, Matilda The Musical won a record-breaking (at the time) seven Olivier Awards when it opened in London’s West End in 2011, and four Tony Awards when it subsequently transferred to Broadway in 2013; on both continents, it was named Best New Musical.
The longest running production to play at the Cambridge Theatre in history, it is the winner of over 100international awards, including 24 for Best Musical. Matilda The Musical has been seen by millions of people worldwide, including London, Australia, New Zealand and on tour in North America.
Matthew Warchus, Artistic Director of The Old Vic, imagines a world of striking colour and hilarious mischief, while Matilda The Musical is adapted for the stage by renowned writer Dennis Kelly, whose previous plays include The Gods Weep, Osama The Hero and Love And Money.
The show’s music and lyrics come from award-winning, mischief-loving Australian musician and comedian Tim Minchin, with beloved songs including Naughty, Quiet, Revolting Children and School Song.
A firm West End favourite and a delight for anybody who has ever felt the rush of rebellion, Matilda The Musical is an anarchic, hilarious, heart-warming and ingenious adaptation of the classic Dahl tale.
