Is freeze-dried raw turkey good for dogs? ›

Both sides are valid – if you are going to feed your dog raw turkey, be very mindful of dates, handling methods, storage, and cleanliness to reduce the growth and spread of bacteria. Freeze-dried. Freeze-drying maintains the nutrients and benefits of raw turkey, but eliminates the risk of bacteria growth.

Safety for the owners

Raw pet food poses similar risks for pathogenic bacteria as do raw meat and eggs for humans (2,15). Freezing, freeze-drying, or dehydration results in a reduction in bacterial counts but viable pathogenic bacteria survive (2–5,15).

Some dogs prefer freeze-dried meals given dry in their bowls with water available on the side. This is perfectly acceptable if your dog drinks water and doesn't get dehydrated. However, most manufacturers recommend adding liquid to freeze-dried meals to prevent dehydration which can cause some serious health issues.

One of the biggest drawbacks of freeze-dried dog food is its cost. It is significantly more expensive than other types of dog food, such as kibble, fresh, or canned food. This is because the freeze-drying process is more time-consuming and energy-intensive than other food preservation formats.

Cost: Freeze-dried does have a higher price point than canned food and kibble, which can make it cost-prohibitive for budget-conscious pet parents. Costs, however, are more affordable than a raw diet — especially when you weigh the value of saving time and storage space and reducing waste.

Since moisture has been removed from the freeze-dried product, this causes the protein and fat levels to be concentrated and appear higher than their raw frozen counterparts.

Freeze-dried raw dog food offers a convenient alternative to frozen raw food. It retains all the nutritional goodness without the need for freezing or refrigeration, making it a top choice for me and my pack of six. This lightweight option is perfect for traveling and suits fussy eaters or those new to a raw diet.

How long can freeze-dried raw dog food sit out? ›

If you feed Instinct Raw Freeze-Dried Meals, store and serve it as you would with any dry pet food (such as kibble). If you choose to rehydrate the food, discard leftovers within two hours. If you don't rehydrate the food, leftovers can be left out for the day.

According to most raw feeders, dogs should eat muscle meat (hamburger, chicken, turkey), as well as a healthy array of organ meat (heart, liver, kidneys), whole fish, and raw meaty bones (aka RMBs).

Generally, a pound of dog kibble is roughly equivalent to about three to four cups.

The 16 ounce bag has approximately 36 scoops per bag. For a 45 pound dog you'd be feeding 8 scoops a day, it'd last approximately 5 days.

We recommend feeding your dog kibble over freeze-dried dog food because it's processed with heat to eliminate bacteria completely. Freeze-dried dog food may not look like meat once it's gone through the freeze-drying process, but it still contains the same pathogens as raw meat, so it's unsafe for your dog.

It's Safe for Dogs

Since dehydrated food undergoes a low-heat cooking process, any harmful bacteria that may be present in the ingredients are killed. This makes dehydrated dog food a safe and healthy alternative to traditional raw diets.

Dogs who are more than three months old can be fed freeze dry chicken. However, when the dog owner feeds freeze dry chicken to the dog for the first time, he needs to feed it in small amounts, and then gradually increase the amount after waiting for the dog to adapt.
